The Dirt MTB: BMX with Big Wheels

The Dirt MTB made its appearance in the 2000s, during the wild years of BMX. The Dirt MTB is like a BMX with big wheels or a motorless motorcycle! Like these two other disciplines, Dirt MTB is practiced on flat or slightly sloped terrain with suitable bumps.

Dirt is a whole mindset and a passion for dirt! It's a discipline you practice with friends on a trail that you built with your own hands using a shovel! (or with a mini excavator if you have big jumps). The goal is to perform the highest and biggest jumps to pull off tricks and get your adrenaline fix.

For some time now, Dirt MTBs have also been used for a related discipline, pump track. Practicing MTB on a pump track will give you more ease and maneuverability on your bike before returning to your dirt jumps. You can use the same bike for both practices!

Why Ride Dirt MTB and Pump Track?

The greatest MTB champions also practice Dirt MTB and pump track. This discipline allows you to acquire valuable bike skills. Learning to handle a bike in the air, in curves, and gaining speed without pedaling are all advantages that will be beneficial during your enduro rides or your weekends at bike parks on tables and banked turns.

Choosing the Right Dirt MTB

A Dirt MTB is very specific. The frame can be made of aluminum or steel, depending on the brand of your bike. Aluminum bikes are more common in Dirt because aluminum has the particularity of being more flexible and absorbing impacts on landings.

A Good Dirt MTB Fork?

The fork has only 100mm of travel. A Dirt bike is rigid; you shouldn't sink between the bumps at the risk of losing speed.

Dirt MTB Wheels: 26"

The wheels are 26"! Yes, the 26" is not dead, far from it! As we said, a Dirt bike is like a big BMX, so 26" is the largest wheel size you can find. Your bike must remain agile and maneuverable in the air. You will also find Dirt MTBs with 24" wheels, which are intended for people coming from BMX or those who are shorter.

Single Speed MTB?

No, we're not talking about fixed gear. In Dirt, we aim to have a lightweight bike for jumping. You won't need to pedal uphill with a Dirt bike. That's why these bikes are single-speed.

Why Do Dirt MTBs Have Only One Brake?

Just like with the drivetrain, on a Dirt MTB, we seek maximum weight savings to have an agile bike. Additionally, for some handlebar tricks, the front brake can be very restrictive.
