Road cycling clothing: the quest for aerodynamics and performance

Road cycling requires equipment designed for speed, endurance and aerodynamic efficiency. On the asphalt, every detail counts to optimise power transfer and reduce wind resistance. Unlike other disciplines, the forward-leaning position on the handlebars requires specific cuts, slightly shorter at the front and longer at the back. Road cycling clothing must therefore offer a second-skin effect, avoid any unnecessary flapping and guarantee excellent moisture management during intense efforts. The goal is to maintain the body at an ideal temperature throughout the miles, whether for a Sunday ride, interval training or a demanding cyclosportive race.

Base layers and jerseys: thermal regulation and a close fit

The multi-layer system is the norm on the road to adapt to the intensity of the effort. The foundation of this equipment relies on road bike base layers. Worn next to the skin, their main mission is to capture moisture and wick it away quickly. In summer, they are ultra-light and ventilated, while in winter, they feature thermal materials to retain body heat. On top of this, the road cycling jersey is fitted. The centerpiece of the cyclist's wardrobe, it is characterised by its close-to-the-body cut, known as "fit" or "aero". The fabrics used are stretchy and extremely breathable. In addition, these jerseys traditionally feature three rear pockets, easily accessible while riding, which are essential for carrying nutrition, a repair kit or an extra layer of clothing.

Jackets and gilets: facing the elements on the asphalt

The speed of travel on the road considerably accentuates the feeling of cold caused by the wind. It is therefore imperative to protect oneself against weather variations. Road cycling jackets & gilets are designed to offer optimal protection without compromising aerodynamics. The windproof gilet is the versatile accessory par excellence. Easy to slip into a jersey pocket, it protects the chest during cool morning departures or on long col descents. For harsher days, thermal and waterproof jackets take over. They use technical membranes capable of blocking icy wind and rain, while allowing condensation from effort to escape. Their cuts always remain fitted so as not to create an unwanted parachute effect.

The importance of the seat: bib shorts, shorts and tights

Comfort on the saddle is the major challenge of long distances. Road cycling bib shorts, generally equipped with straps for impeccable support, are fitted with a chamois pad specially designed to filter road vibrations and prevent chafing. The muscle compression offered by elastane fibres also helps delay fatigue. Although tight bib shorts are the performance standard on the road, road cycling shorts can appeal to bike commuters, urban couriers or cycle tourists looking for a more relaxed look during city transfers. When the cold season sets in, road cycling tights, often called long tights, become essential. They fully wrap the legs with brushed fabrics on the inside for maximum thermal insulation, while preserving the pedalling fluidity essential for a high cadence.

Ergonomic cuts dedicated to men and women

As anatomy dictates comfort needs, road equipment offers distinct ranges for men and women. The differences focus particularly on the bib short inserts, whose density and shape are moulded to respect female or male pelvic morphology. In the same way, the construction of the straps, the tailoring of the jerseys or the length of the sleeves are adapted to perfectly fit the lines of the body. An outfit technically adapted to each profile eliminates pressure points and unnecessary friction. Attention can thus be focused exclusively on performance, effort management and the ribbon of asphalt unfolding on the horizon.
