MTB helmets with removable chin guard: the compromise between open-face and full-face
Long shunned because of complicated mechanisms or excessive weight, the MTB helmet with a removable chin guard has become the obvious choice for committed rides and enduro. The idea is simple: climb without suffocating in a well-ventilated open shell, then clip on the chin guard at the top to tackle steep singletrack with the facial protection of a full-face helmet. It saves you from carrying two helmets in your pack or climbing in a standard full-face under scorching heat.
How the removable chin guard works and how to handle it
The success of a good modular helmet comes down first of all to its ergonomics. At the top of a stage, nobody wants to spend ten minutes wrestling with tiny screws or levers jammed with dust. Brands have greatly simplified the systems: quarter-turn side latches, guide rails or magnetic fasteners now let you lock the chin guard in a few seconds, sometimes without even taking off the helmet. Once removed, the piece slips easily onto the straps of a hydration pack.
Protection level and ASTM certification for downhill
The real question remains how well it withstands a direct impact to the chin. To ride hard in a bike park or on loose scree, you absolutely must look at the certifications. The ASTM F1952 standard (the downhill-specific standard) ensures that the chin guard withstands violent impacts without giving way or detaching. Many recent convertible helmets pass these tests with flying colours, proving that a removable system can offer safety comparable to a one-piece full-face helmet.
Bell, Met, Leatt, Urge, Endura, Abus: a look at the manufacturers
The market is now well structured around several specialists. Bell is the pioneer with its famous Super range, which made the detachable chin guard mainstream. Leatt stands out for its high level of head protection thanks to its Turbine 360 technology, while Met offers technically accomplished models with a very rigid locking system. Urge, for its part, bets on lightweight, eco-designed concepts built for long days in the mountains. Finally, Endura and Abus round out the picture with particularly sturdy modular helmets, perfect for switching between relaxed all-mountain rides and committed sessions on enduro trails.
