Dreaming of cruising on asphalt, improving your fitness, and exploring new horizons? A road bike is perfect for building endurance and speed. To get started under the best conditions, here are Alltricks’ tips for choosing a beginner road bike.

How to Choose a Beginner Road Bike?

The first choice is between an Endurance bike, more comfortable thanks to a more upright geometry, and a Sport/Performance model, longer and lower to optimize aerodynamics. As a beginner, favor endurance: the position is less demanding on your back and neck.

First: Frame Material

Most entry-level bikes are made from aluminum: sturdy, lightweight, and affordable. Some frames include carbon inserts in the seat stays or fork for added comfort. Full carbon frames are also available at accessible prices, but aluminum remains an excellent choice for starting out.

Second: Position and Geometry

Check the reach and stack (handlebar length and height) to keep your arms slightly bent and your back at about a 45° angle. Alltricks sizing guides help you choose the right frame. You can also adjust the stem length or spacer height to fine-tune your posture.

Third: Braking System

Two technologies are available:

  • Rim Brakes (Dual Pivot): lightweight and easy to maintain, they perform well in dry conditions. Many entry-level bikes still use them at great prices.
  • Disc Brakes (mechanical or hydraulic): consistent braking power, effective in the rain, and no rim wear. Discs are becoming the standard, even on entry-level bikes. If your budget allows, go for disc brakes – it’s a safer choice.

Fourth: Drivetrain

Road bikes typically use a double crankset (50‑34t or 52‑36t) or compact gearing. The rear cassette usually has 9 to 12 speeds. An 11‑32t range is versatile for beginners, allowing you to climb without burning out your legs.

Which Groupset to Choose for a Beginner Road Bike?

Shimano offers Claris (8-speed), Sora (9-speed), and Tiagra (10-speed): reliable and easy to tune. If your budget allows, aiming for Tiagra ensures future compatibility with 10/11-speed wheels.

For SRAM, Apex and Rival cover entry to mid-range, with intuitive DoubleTap shifting. You may also find mixed setups: Rival derailleur, Apex cassette, etc. The key is to stay within the same speed range (10 or 11-speed).

Remember to clean your chain after every ride and replace it once it reaches 0.75% wear – this extends the life of your cassette.
