High altitude mountaineering requires impeccable personal protective equipment. Among essential elements, alpinism helmets occupy a central place to preserve physical integrity against the risks of rockfall, ice fragments or impacts during a fall on rock. Unlike ski or cycling models, these specific protections are developed to meet strict standards, notably EN 12492 certification and UIAA requirements. These regulations guarantee effective impact absorption on the top of the head, but also on lateral, front and rear zones. Good equipment must remain unnoticed while offering maximum protection against the hazards of the vertical environment. The evolution of materials now makes it possible to combine remarkable solidity with featherweight, thus reducing muscle fatigue in the cervical area during long days of climbing.
The vertical industry offers different constructions for alpinism helmets to meet the requirements of each type of course. Hard shell construction, often in thick ABS plastic, integrates an expanded foam liner to absorb impact energy. This type of model, renowned for its robustness and durability, offers excellent resistance to scratches and rough handling during transport in a backpack. Conversely, In-Mold structures combine a thin polycarbonate layer directly fused to absorbent expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam. This method prioritizes absolute lightness, ideal for technical climbs where every gram counts. Finally, hybrid constructions combine the best of both worlds: a hard upper shell for protection against falling objects and semi-rigid expanded polypropylene (EPP) foam side walls to maximize lateral shock absorption while reducing overall product volume. Some innovations even incorporate a significant percentage of recycled materials in the shell or foam, limiting environmental impact without compromising durability.
Reliable support throughout the day remains a key selection criterion when purchasing alpinism helmets. Precise morphological adjustment is generally achieved through a reduced-volume suspension system or an adjustment dial located at the back of the head circumference, supplemented by fully adjustable chin straps in height and width. These devices stabilize the entire unit to prevent unintended tilting during exertion. Thermal comfort depends directly on the ventilation system. The presence of numerous ventilation holes around the shell promotes optimal air circulation, an essential asset during summer courses or intensive approach marches under the sun. Inside, removable and washable foams, sometimes made of absorbent fibers like bamboo, eliminate uncomfortable pressure points. The versatility of a model is also measured by its accessories: integrated hooks at the front and an elastic system at the rear prove essential for securely attaching a headlamp during night departures, while the ability to adapt a ski mask extends the range of use to winter courses.
The market offers a variety of models designed by the biggest names in mountaineering. The Petzl brand distinguishes itself with hybrid designs featuring enhanced protection against lateral, front and rear impacts, offering versatile and durable products adapted to alpinism, via ferrata or canyoning. On the Black Diamond side, the emphasis is on ultra-resistant models with innovative dual-block shells and a compact design to minimize encumbrance. Mammut manufacturer offers high-end equipment combining ergonomics and cutting-edge technologies for demanding alpinists seeking pure performance. For those seeking an excellent balance between lightness, technical sophistication and accessibility, Simond designs hyper-ventilated products ideal for cliffs and summer courses. Finally, the Camp brand brings its historical expertise with refined structures and ingenious adjustment systems, perfect for enthusiasts of minimalism and speed in the mountains. Each manufacturer brings its own technical response to ensure maximum safety for every climber.
