The crankset, a part that moves you forward
The crankset, made up of chain rings and crank handles as in a road bike, are part of the transmission. With the cranks, you will transmit the necessary energy to make your MTB roll, through the chain and the cogset, or fixed pinion for the Fixies. The crankset is connected by the bottom bracket that passes through the frame.
There are several types of cranksets, steel, aluminium or carbon, more or less rigid (carbon being the most rigid). Cranksets are generally available in triple, double or mono chain rings to better adapt to the different MTB practices. In DH or freeride, the use of a mono chain ring is common, while in cross-country as in road bike the double and triple chain ring is still widespread.
In spite of these different criteria, the manufacturers aim to make cranks combining rigidity and lightness.
How do you know the criteria to change your pedals?
To choose your cranks compatible with your bottom bracket, you must be aware of the following criteria:
- the number of chain rings,
- the number of speeds,
- the toothing,
- the pedals' standard,
- the length of the crank handles,
- the pedal axle.
