Triathlon Races and Distances

According to the ITU (International Triathlon Union), the official triathlon competitions are:

Ironman Triathlon: This is an extreme race, with the longest distances in triathlon: 3.8 km of swimming, 180.2 km of cycling, and 42.2 km of running (a full marathon!).
Long Course (Half-Ironman or Ironman 70.3): 1.9 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling, and 21.1 km of running (half-marathon).
Intermediate Course: This is the most common and Olympic distance. The distances are 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling, and 10 km running.
Sprint Format: 750m swimming, 20 km cycling, and 5 km running.

In each triathlon competition, there are transitions. These allow athletes to switch from swimming to cycling (called T1) and from cycling to running (called T2). The transition time is included in the competition and is part of the final official time. It is therefore an important parameter and a strategic moment of the race.

It tests the limits of human endurance with its grueling distances: 3.8 km of swimming, 180.2 km of cycling, and 42.2 km of running. Triathlon: Swimming, Cycling, Running

Triathlon is a Tri Sport event involving the complettion of three disciplines: Swimming (open water or not), Cycling and Running.
There are variations of the sport but the most popular is the one with the disciplines mentioned above.
A Tri Sport event took place in 1902 featuring running, canoeing and cycling but the first Triathlon featuring cycling, running & swimming took place in the 20s in France.

Triathlon Races

Races can vary in distance. According to the ITU (International Triathlon Union), the main races distances are, from the longest to the shortest distances:
- Ironman Triathlon: it is an ultra distance race. 3.8km swim, 180.2km bike and 42.2km run (a full marathon).
- Long course: 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21.1km run which is a half marathon.
- Intermediate distance: it is the standard and olympic distance. Distances are 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run.
- Sprint: 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run.
Triathlon races are well organized and transition areas are created to allow athletes to change their gear for each segment of the race. In this area, athletes switch from swimming to cycling and then cycling to running. Each triathlete store their Road Bike or TT bike and Running apparel.
The overall time includes the time spent in these areas so it is always impressive to see the top athletes changing their gear in few seconds.

Triathlon Rules

There are few basic rules. As Triathlon is an individual sport, triathletes are competiting against the clock. They are not allowed to receive any kind of assistance from persons outside the race (excepted aid volunteers who give water and food during the race).
Also, time penalties can be incurred for drafting on the bike, improper passing or in case of misconduct. Athlete's helmet must be worn before mounting on the bike and it must remain on until the triathlete has dismounted.
5 sequential sections are timed during the race, these time are added together to create a total time:
- From the start of the race (swim) to the start of the transition in the first area.
- Time spent in the first transition area.
- From the start of cycling to the start of the transition in the second area.
- Time spent in the second transition area.
- From the start of running until the end.

And of course, athletes are not allowed to use an Electric Bike!
