Electric gravel bikes are gaining popularity among cycling enthusiasts, and for good reason. More than just a trend, they represent a true revolution, making cycling accessible to a wider audience and pushing the boundaries of exploration. Offering the perfect blend of versatility and performance, these bikes are designed to adapt to all types of terrain—from rugged trails to smooth urban roads, and even forgotten backroads.
They are the ideal companions for adventure, whether for an afternoon workout or a multi-day bikepacking trip. Often equipped with powerful yet discreet motors and long-lasting batteries, they enable cyclists of all levels to cover longer distances, tackle once-intimidating climbs, and do so with less effort. The electric assist acts as an equalizer, allowing friends of different skill levels to ride together or letting a cyclist get home after a long workday without exhaustion.
The electric gravel bike is built for adventure and performance. Like its traditional counterpart, it combines the endurance features of a road bike (position, drop handlebars) with the off-road capabilities of a mountain bike (wide tires, disc brakes, stable geometry). However, the addition of a motor and battery makes the choice more complex, depending on several key criteria.
There are two main types of motors. Mid-drive motors (like Bosch, Brose, or Shimano systems) deliver high torque (over 50 Nm) and powerful assistance. On the other hand, lighter systems located in the rear hub (such as Mahle X35/X20) or compact mid-drive systems (like Fazua Ride 60) offer a more natural feel and reduced weight.
Battery capacity (Wh) is crucial: 250–400 Wh for lightweight models, 500–630 Wh or more for powerful systems. Range depends on many factors, and "range extenders" can add an extra 150 to 250 Wh.
Aluminum is durable, reliable, and affordable. Carbon is lighter, more comfortable, and allows for better integration of the motor and battery.
Hydraulic disc brakes are essential, along with gravel-specific groupsets (Shimano GRX, SRAM XPLR) and tire clearance typically between 40 and 50 mm (700c) for a good balance of comfort and efficiency.
The range of electric gravel bikes has become increasingly diverse over the years. Manufacturers, aware of cyclists’ specific needs, now offer tailored models.
Women’s electric gravel bikes go beyond just color. They feature frame geometries and contact points (saddle, handlebar width) designed for female ergonomics, ensuring optimal comfort from the first pedal stroke.
The growing accessibility of electric gravel bikes allows more people to enjoy this technology. These models, often made of aluminum and equipped with reliable hub motors, make no compromises on safety or enjoyment.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, high-end models (often exceeding €5,000) push innovation to its limits: ultra-light carbon frames, compact and nearly invisible assist systems (like those on the Orbea Gain or Scott Solace), wireless electronic drivetrains, and carbon wheels.
Market leaders like Cube, Orbea, and Cannondale stand out for their innovation. But they’re not alone. Brands such as Scott, BH, BMC, and Van Rysel also offer high-quality bikes that meet the demands of the most discerning cyclists.
Innovation isn’t limited to motors. It’s also seen in fully integrated cables, connected apps for managing assistance and tracking rides, and even the emergence of micro-suspension systems. Whether it’s lightweight fork suspensions (like the RockShox Rudy) or frame-integrated systems (such as BMC’s MTT technology on the URS), the goal is the same: to ensure a smooth and enjoyable ride, whether in urban environments or on rough trails.
Electric gravel bikes make adventure possible for more people, more often, and over greater distances. They eliminate excuses, leaving only the joy of riding, exploring, and discovering new horizons. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist looking to optimize your rides or a beginner eager to explore the world on two wheels, an electric gravel bike might be the perfect companion. A new era in cycling has begun—and it’s open to everyone.
