The rim tape is a strip that is placed all around the rim MTB (except on some models of tubeless rims). The rim tape is located between the rim and the inner tube, thus protecting the latter from punctures. Indeed, punctures can be caused by the heads of the spoke and imperfections on the rim.

When choosing your rim tape , it's important to choose the right diameter according to your MTB wheel (26, 27.5 or 29 inches) as well as the correct width.
A rim tape wich is too narrow won't hold well and wider one won't fit perfectly between the rim and the inner tube.

Mountain Bike Rim Tape

A Rim Tape is applied around any MTB rim (except few Tubeless rims). This Rim Tape sits between the rim and the inner tube to protect from punctures. Indeed, punctures can be caused by the sharp edges of spoke and imperfections in the rim (pinch flats or scratches).

Rim tapes can be made from different materials (rubber or fabric), can be a circular strip or a length of sticky tape. In any case, the tape has the same role to prevent punctures on your mountain bike.

When you are choosing rim tape, it is important to choose the right diameter for your MTB wheel (26"", 27.5"" or 29"") and as well the right width:
A tape too narrow will slide out of place and a tape too wide won't fit the inner rim.
